The Great Lena Horne has Died

Lena Horne, singer, actress, and civil rights activist has died. She was 92 years old. She was best known for her song “Stormy Weather”.

Horne started her career at age 16 as a chorus girl at the famed Cotton Club until she moved to Hollywood to begin her movie career.

As the grandaughter of a freed slave, Horne dedicated her life to fighting racism and protecting the civil rights of African-Americans.  In the 1940’s, she refused to perform for segregated audiences, which caused her to be kicked off of a USO tour for the WWII troops.  In the 1950’s, she was blacklisted in Hollywood as a result of the second “Red Scare”. In the 1960’s, she was participating in NAACP rallies alongside Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King Junior.
