Ryan Dunn, one of the stars of the MTV show and feature films “Jackass” has died. He was 34 years old.
Dunn was out drinking with friends when he and an unidentified companion took off in Dunn’s black Porsche 911 GT3. At approximately 3am, the car crashed into a wooded area in Pennsylvania near Route 322 and New Street in West Goshen Township. It is rumored that Dunn was behind the wheel. The vehicle caught on fire and both occupants died at the scene.
I’ll always remember Dunn for being coerced into shoving a condom- wrapped matchbox car up his ass before going to a doctor for x-rays.
Here’s a parting video of him and his BFF Bam Margera doing what they do best – driving recklessly at unsafe speeds.
We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening (4/25/11) to go to higher places. Poly Styrene was born Marianne Elliot Said on June 3, 1957. She passed away due to cancer.
Poly Styrene was a punk amongst punks. A groundbreaking presence that left an unrepeatable mark on the musical landscape, she made history the moment she uttered, “Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard but I think oh bondage up yours!” The influence of Poly and X-ray Spex has been felt far and wide ever since. The seminal album Germ Free Adolescents is a landmark work and a primary influence on Britpop and Riot Grrrl. At the center of it was Poly Styrene, a bi-racial feminist punk with the perfect voice to soundtrack rebellion. Poly never sacrificed the intelligence or the fun in her music and style. Her trademark braces and dayglo clothes were a playful rejection of the status quo and of conformity and complacency. She dissected gender politics, consumer culture, and the obsessions of modern life in a way that made us all want sing along with her.
At the core of Poly’s work from Germ Free Adolescents through Generation Indigo, is a revolutionary with a genuine love for this world and the people and things in it. Her indomitable heart is all over the new material from her championing of cruelty free products and as she put it, “being conscious of the slaughterhouse culture” (“I Luv Ur Sneakers”) to giving voice to marginalized poor people worldwide (“No Rockefeller”) to tackling racism (“Colour Blind”). Poly Styrene never stopped exciting us with her incisive world-view, amazing wit, and her adventurous sound. It is impossible to imagine what modern music would be like without her incalculable contributions but it’s probably not worth imagining a world that never had Poly Styrene in it.
A thrilling work from a true pioneer and rebel in every sense, Poly Styrene’s album Generation Indigo is out today through Future Noise Music and was produced by Youth (The Verve, Killing Joke, The Fireman, Edwyn Collins). The album’s fusion of punk spirit, and fresh sounds has already received rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic from Spin, NPR, NME, MOJO and countless others. The forward looking Generation Indigo showcases Poly’s humorous musings on pop culture, the internet and fashion whilst also tackling heavier subject matter (war and racism) with her politically aware and intelligent lyrics all in the inimitable voice of a genuine icon. Listen to the full Generation Indigo record streaming on AOL Spinner.
Poly was very proud of Generation Indigo. See an interview where she discusses the album track by track here. The album is released in the US today.
Manson Attorney Claims Tex Watson Was Behind Tate, LaBianca Murders
LONDON, England – In response to a request for clemency for Charles Manson by defense attorney Giovanni Di Stefano, the United States Department of Justice on behalf of President Barack Obama stated, “The President does not seek to intervene in State clemency issues,” and suggested that the request be sent instead to the current California Governor, Jerry Brown.
Speaking from the Royal Courts of Justice in London, Di Stefano stated, “President Obama has the powers under the 14th Amendment and I duly notified President Obama on the 28th February 2011 with detailed submissions. This matter must now be resolved by the Supreme Court.” Di Stefano continued, “Mr. Manson has already served over 42 years and on the basis he is erroneously convicted. He should not be subject to a day further of liberty detained. Mr. Manson has spent enough time in custody, therefore this matter is urgent and cannot be delayed further.”
Di Stefano’s main complaint is that evidence was withheld and that it was, in fact, Tex Watson who masterminded and perpetrated both the Tate and LaBianca murders. The complaint states, “There is now evidence from a California Police Officer that Tex Watson may well have committed murder some nine months prior to any of the killings which if correct would destroy the theory of the Prosecutor that the co-defendants murdered by the mind control of the Applicant.”
Allegedly, this new evidence ties Tex Watson to the murder of an elderly man Karl Stubbs in Olancha, California before Watson was involved with Manson.
Manson is now represented in his appeal by London-based lead attorney Giovanni Di Stefano and Zurich-based US attorney Mitch Watkins.
Teena Marie, the only white female artist (besides Michael Jackson) to break into the R&B music scene to a urban majority audience has died of “natural causes” at the age of 54.
On the evening of December 26, Marie was found dead in her bedroom by her daughter Alia Rose (also known under stage name Rose LeBeau) one day after Alia’s December 25th Birthday.
Teena Marie was an R&B singer/guitarist and a protégé of soul artist Rick James. Romantically and professionally linked to James, the duo often collaborated and toured together.
Stemming from her lawsuit against Motown records, she leaves behind as her legacy “The Teena Marie Law”, which states that a record company cannot hold an artist under contract without publishing their material.
Part 2: Twitter Goes Apeshit
It started with rumors and speculation on Twitter. Did Teena Marie die or not? After all, there was a Teena Marie death hoax a few years ago. And she admittedly had a prior addiction to prescription medication. But no one wants to look stupid claiming that she died and looking like a sucker if the person in question did not actually die.
It all appeared to start with Shelia E’s announcement:
Then Questo from The Roots replied to Sheila and said he needed a whiter source of news. (I know the time stamps are off, but I just took screenshots at different times):
Then came the Twitter backlash against Questlove ranging from things like his Courtney Love comment, his need for a “whiter” news source, his seemingly contrived grieving for Teena Marie, etc.
Don’t get me wrong: I’m a big fan of the Roots and I love Questlove on twitter because he talks politics, love, and usually keeps it real and makes people think. But for a few minutes, I thought that this had the potential to be his Rick Sanchez moment and his downfall. Remember when CNN fired Rick Sanchez during his tirade against Jon Stewart? It went like this:
“I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they — the people in this country who are Jewish — are an oppressed minority? Yeah.” – Rick Sanchez
But the music business is more forgiving if you keep making hit records. So rock-on Questo!
By the way, here are Teena Marie’s last twats, a quote about living forever and birthday wishes for her daughter. Very sad. My condolences to Rose. :
Here is Rick James and Teena Marie singing, “I’m Just a Sucker for Your Love”
On December 22, 1985, D. Boon, the 27-year-old singer/guitarist for the band Minutemen died tragically. He was killed in a single car accident on I-10 in Arizona after the van that he was a passenger in ran off the road and ejected him from the rear doors.
I went by his grave on Thanksgiving and cleaned it during my annual grave-cleaning trek (My father, aunt, father-in-law, and lots of friends are buried in the same cemetery). But his grave is at the bottom of a hill and was caked in mud and oil (as you can see from the greasy tire mark made from a riding mower).
Another tragedy is that the Minutemen albums are big sellers for SST records (owned by Greg Ginn), and I can tell you on behalf of George Hurley that he hasn’t seen a lick of royalties ever. Time to lawyer-up, I say. If it weren’t illegal, I’d recommend that you go and download “3-Way Tie (For Last)” on the torrents. But that’s illegal so don’t do it.
Morris (Moshe) Katz has died after suffering a stroke at his home in Manhattan, New York. He was 78-years-old.
Known for his painting technique of using a palette knife wrapped in toilet paper in lieu of a conventional paintbrush, this unconventional artist holds two Guinness World Records; one for “world’s fastest painter” and the other for “world’s most prolific artist.”
Katz is also listed in “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” as as a human oddity for his ability to paint full works of art in less than five minutes using his “Instant Art Method.”
1950s sex-symbol Tony Curtis has died. He was 85 years old. He died on Wednesday night at his Las Vegas area home. The preliminary cause of death is cardiac arrest
Curtis was best known for such films as “The Defiant Ones” and “Some Like It Hot.” He was also well known as the ex-husband of “Psycho” actress Janet Leigh and the father of actress Jamie Lee Curtis.
Daughter Jamie Lee Curtis made a statement about her late father:
“My father leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings and assemblages. He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world. He will be greatly missed..”
