Comedian and Author Robert Schimmel Has Died

Posted in Deaths, News with tags , , , , , , , on September 5, 2010 by Ro

Robert Schimmel, comedian and author, has died from injuries suffered in a car accident. He was 60 years old.

Schimmel and his son were passengers in a car driven by his 19-year-old daughter Aliyah in Phoenix, Arizona when the accident occurred. Witnesses say that Aliyah had swerved to avoid an accident in her lane and lost control of the vehicle, causing her car to roll over several times before landing on the shoulder of the highway. Shimmel suffered major injuries and died days later at a Phoenix hospital. Aliyah and her younger brother sustained minor injuries. All occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

Rodney Dangerfield introduced Schimmel to the world when Dangerfield invited Shimmel to appear on his HBO “Young Comedians” special. Like Schimmel’s idol Lenny Bruce, his act was considered too raunchy and he refused to tone it down. As a result, he was often shunned by mainstream audiences and limited to late-night or satellite shows that were less controlled by the FCC. Named one of Comedy Central’s 100 Greatest Comics, he has numerous specials on HBO and Showtime, and has appeared regularly on The Howard Stern Show and Conan O’Brien.

No stranger to tragedy, Schimmel was the son of two Holocaust survivors. As an adult, he lost his then 11-year-old son Derek to leukemia. Since then, he has survived a heart attack, survived cancer treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and was on the list for a liver transplant due to  cirrhosis of the liver caused by hepatitis C, which he had contracted after a blood transfusion.

Through it all, Schimmel remained open about his health and personal life. Finding strength in humor, he wrote two books: “Cancer on Five Dollars a Day* (*chemo not included)”  and ” How Humor Got Me Through the Toughest Journey of My Life. “

“So my wife said she read this article in a magazine and she said: “You know, maybe you’re suffering from premature ejaculation.” Yeah, does it look like I’m suffering? Those aren’t tears on your belly. ” ~ Robert Schimmel

American Idol producers want Howard Stern to replace Simon

NY POST: “American Idol” producers are eager to hire Howard Stern to replace Simon Cowell as the show’s tough-talking judge, sources tell Page Six.

An insider said that producers of the hit Fox show say Stern, America’s highest-paid radio personality, is their top choice to take over from Cowell, who leaves at the end of this season. They approached the King of All Media after he repeatedly mentioned on-air that his exclusive Sirius XM Radio deal expires next January and he was open to other offers. Cowell was paid $50 million a year.

A source connected to “Idol” said, “It’s one of the few shows that could compete with Stern’s $100 million-a-year Sirius contract, and ‘Idol’ bosses think he’d be even nastier than Simon.

“They know he would be great TV and would clash with the other judges such as Ellen DeGeneres and the contestants. ‘Idol’ will do what it takes to sign him.”

But a second source told us Stern hasn’t made the “Idol” talks easy, and has been giving out mixed messages about his intentions.

“Despite what he’s been saying on-air, Howard isn’t ready to leave radio and would like to stay on at Sirius,” the source said. “We believe this is a ploy to make Sirius pay up and keep him on his huge contract. But if Sirius can’t pay him the money he wants, he may negotiate to film ‘Idol’ on the side.”

Stern is also believed to be reluctant to commit to a show that would require him to tour the US as a judge and spend much of the year in Los Angeles.

He recently said, somewhat cryptically, “I was approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year — and I did turn it down . . . I’m not even sure if I want to be working. I’m waiting to see what happens.”

This will never happen. Even if they moved the show to New York, Stern would not travel around the country to listen to the initial auditions. Stern would love to take the job, considering he is into the show more than a prepubescent girl. I think he would be awesome on it, insulting Seacrest, Ellen, Randy, and most likely key Fox executives by the second show.

Let’s not forget this is another show or concept that Stern claimed to conceive, because he used to have 3 record producers on his show to listen to amateur bands, and have them fight for a contract. Of course Stern has interviewed Kevin Bacon, therefore by 6 or less degrees of separation, Stern has invented every concept ever used on TV since Stern’s first shows on college radio. He will inform you of this fact repeatedly as well.

This is nothing but a PR move by FOX to promote Idol, on a FOX owned newspaper, as a viable show. This comes on the heels of the mass realization that the show has grown stale, lost it’s key talent, and was gay from the beginning. Not homosexual gay, but just gay like having sex with another man in his anus.

This is the last you will hear of this, unless you listen to The Howard Stern Radio Show, where he will talk about it repeatedly, and refer to it until he retires.
